Augmentative & Alternative Communication System An augmentative and alternative communication system (AAC) is used to enhance communication for people with severe speech impairments. The chosen AAC system may supplement or replace the person's ability to gesture, speak or write and enhance participation in life activities. AAC provides a method to facilitate communication for both children and adults. Individuals that may benefit from the use of AAC systems would include those with permanent communication impairments (e.g., dysarthria, aphasia, apraxia) and those with a temporary impairment (e.g., tracheostomy placement, intubation). For additional information on AAC systems, visit the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association website at www.asha.org. Capland Center offers assessment and treatment programs for individuals needing AAC devices. Contact the center today for additional information on this program.
